"Be A Buddy Not A Bully"

Hillside Catholic Acadmey is launching a new program. "Be A Buddy Not A Bully," is a program put forward by Mrs. Angela Vasil Student Government Advisor. The students signed a large poster promising to fight bullying.

"All Souls Day"

On Tuesday November 2 Hillside Catholic conducted our, "All Souls Day Assembly." The names of the dearly departed were read by class.

"Saints Alive"

On November 1 Hillside Catholic Academy celebrated All Saints Day with our 'Saints Alive' Assembly. The members of our Grade 5 class took the role of their favorite saint and told the school about them. This celebration has been part of our school tradition since the opening of our school.

"Success"

Hillside Catholic Academy students Jordan Hamilton and Kenya Jacobs gave impressive performances at the 39th Roselle Catholic Scholastic Olympiad. Jordan finised 2nd in the English competition. Kenya finised 3rd in Current Events.

"Breast Cancer Awareness"

Yesterday was "Breast Cancer Awareness Day" at Hillside Catholic Academy. The students were allowed to, 'dress down', and make a contribution towards research for finding a cure to this disease. To this date we have raised $400.

"Red Ribbons Week"

This week Hillside Catholic Academy celebrated, "Red Ribbon Week." The students and faculty wore red ribbons to celebrate this important week. The week was put togehter by Ms. Alison Gmelin our Art teacher who created red ribbons for everyone!

"School Pictures"

Today our friends from "Photo Life" came and took our school pictures. These pictures will serve as the basis of our yearbook.

"Pumpkin Picking"

Today our Grades K, 1,2, and 3 will be picking pumpkins at Wightman's Farms in Morristown, New Jesey. This should be a very fun, exciting, and informative morning.

"Meet the Coaches Night"

Tonight Hillside Catholic Academy will host our 'Annual Meet the Coaches
Night.' The students and their parents will get a chance to meet the coaches of our basketball and cheerleading squads.

"C.S.I.Benedictine"

On Saturday September 25 five Hillside Catholic Academy grade 8 students took part in Benedictine Academy's C.S.I. Day. The girls were taken to a crime scene and had to determine what took place. The Hillside Catholic Academy team placed fourth out of thirteen teams, and finished second among Catholic schools.

"Chamber of Commerce"

Last night Hillside Catholic Academy hosted the Hillside Chamber of Commerce. The members were given tours of the school by the members of the Executive Board of the Student Council. They were impressed by our building and our students.

"Back To School Night"

Tonight is "Back To School Night." Tonight the parents will have an opportunity to meet each teacher. The parents will come away with the answer to one question. "What does my child need to do to have success in this class?" "Back To School Night," begins at 7:00 p.m.

"Grade 8 Scholarships"

This year our Grade 8 studnets received scholarships to the following schools;

The amount awarded to our Grade 8 students is $33,850.

"Grade 8 Finals"

This week our Grade 8 students will take their final tests. These tests cover the material covered during the Third Trimester. The final tests account for 20% of the final Third Trimester grade.

"Art Show"

Last night in addition to our Science Fair we conducted, "The Sixth Annual Hillside Catholic Academy Art Show." The show was put together by Mrs. Mary Ellen McVeigh our Art teacher. It was a wonderful event.

"Science Fair"

Today the, "Sixth Annual Hillside Catholic Academy Science Fair," will take place. The students have created projects in Life, Physical, and Earth Science. The Science Fair has been developed under the guidance of Mrs. Angela Vasil our Science teacher.

Hillside Catholic Academy students will show off their talents at the Initial Hillside Catholic Academy Idol Contest. The stars of the future will be on display.

"Liberty Science Center"

Today students in Grades 5,6,and 7 will take a trip to Liberty Science Center. This trip has been organized by our Science teacher and Grade 7 homeroom teacher Mrs. Angela Vasil.

"Mrs. Speer"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy congratulates Mrs. Maddalena Speer. Mrs. Spreer will receive her Masters Degree from Caldwell College on Saturday May 18.

"Ascension Thursday"

Today is Ascension Thursday. This is a Holy Day of Obligation. As a school we will be attending the 8:00 a.m. Mass at Christ the King Church.

"May Crowning"

Today we will celebrate May Crowning. Grade 2 and 4 students who received their First Holy Communion will take part in this ceremony. Two have been selected to crown our Blessed Mother

"Teacher Appreciation"

Yesterday Hillside Catholic Academy celebrated, "Teacher Appreciation Day." The faculty and staff were treated to a delicious lunch. Hillside Catholic Academy is very proud of hard working faculty. They work very hard each day for our students.

"The Penguin Show"

On Tuesday May 4 our students in Grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 4 were treated to the, "The Penguin Show." The students were visited by a penguin and learned all about how they live.

"The Rosary"

To celebrate the month of our Blessed Mother Hillside Catholic Academy will open each day reciting a decade of the Holy Rosary.

"HCA Idol"

The talents of Hillside Catholic Academy students will be on display on Friday May 21. Our students will be take part in the, "Initial Hillside Catholic Academy Idol Show." Rehearsal for the show will begin today.

"Oral Report"

Today the Middle States Visiting Committee concludes their work. After the students have been dismissed they will deliver a brief oral report. We thank the visiting committee for their work on behalf of our schoool.

"Middle States Visit Day Two"

Today the Visting Committee continues their visit. They will meet with parents, students, and various other members of our community. Tomorrow they will issue a brief report to the faculty and staff before they leave us.

"Middle States Visit"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will be visited by members of the Visting Team from the Middle States Assoication of Colleges and Schools. They will be our guests for the next three days.

"Working at the Car Wash"

On Saturday April 24 the Grade 8 students conducted, "The Second Annual Grade 8 Car Wash." The proceeds went to help pay for their class trip. It was a great success!!

"Spring Concert"

Tonight Hillside Catholic Academy will conduct, "The Sixth Annual Hillside Catholic Academy Spring Concert." This is under the direction of Mr. Claude Washington.

"Earth Day"

Hillside Catholic Academy celebrted 'Earth Day' today. The students were able to dress down in their 'Earth Day' t-shirts and jeans. They also were in a contest to name a stuffed hawk. Our Kindergarten class won the contest. Our Grade 8, 7 and 2 students planted as part of their celebration.

"D.A.R.E. Graduation"

On April 20, 2010 Hillside Catholic Academy conducted The Sixth Annual Dare Graduation. This course teaches the students the dangers of drug use. It taught each year to our Grade 5 students.

"Parishes"

Hillside Catholic Academy is the parish school of Christ the King and St. Catherine of Siena parishes. Today four students will serve a funeral mass at Christ the King church.

"Name the Hawk"

Hillside Catholic Academy will celebrate Earth Day with a "Name the Hawk" Contest. The students are submitting names for a stuffed Hawk visiting the school from the Newark Museum.

"Spring Concert Practice"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will conduct practice for our Spring Concert. The Spring Concert will take place on Friday April 23, 2010.

"Self Study"

On Tuesday April 27 Hillside Catholic Academy will be visited by a members of Middle States Commission on Elementary Schools. We are working towards our Intital Accredition. This self-study is the result of over a week of work by our faculty.

"Frog and Toad"

Hillside Catholic Academy's K through Grade 3 students recently took in a performance of, "Frog and Toad." This was at the Paper Mill Play House in Millburn, New Jersey. The students enjoyed the performance.

"Spring Arts Festival"

Today members of our 8th and 7th grades will take part in the Union County Spring Arts Festival. These students will be showing their artistic talents. Their efforts are lead by Mrs. Mary Ellen McViegh our Art teacher.

"Busy Day"

Today is a most busy day. Our students in Grades K, 1,2,3 and 4 will be taking part in an assembly on recycling put on by the, "Peppermint Puppets." This is provided by the Hillside Recycling Department. Our Grade 5,6,,7, 8 students will be going to Union Catholic Regional High School to see their spring musical. A most busy day.

"Breakfast With New Principal"

This morning Hillside Catholic Academy will conduct, "The Sixth Annual Breakfast With Your New Principal." Those Grade 8 students who have registered at Catholic high school will get to have breakfast with their new principal. The following school will send representatives;

"Next Year High School"

Today our Grade 8 students will be getting ready for next year. Ms. Branco from Benedictine Academy will be here to speak to them. She will discuss how they can best find success during their first year in high school.

"Terra Nova Testing"

Terra Nova testing begin today. The Terra Nova tests are a valuable tool in assessing the progress of our students. The Terra Nova tests will conclude on Friday March 5.

"Getting Ready"

This week our students have been getting ready for the Terra Nova Tests. The students will be taking practice tests and activities. The Terra Nova Tests are valuable tools in assessing our students.

"Stations of the Cross"

Today the students of Hillside Catholic Academy will pray the Stations of the Cross. This tradition was begun by St. Francis of Assisi and recreates the Passion of Jesus Christ.

"Ash Wednesday"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will celebrate Ash Wednesday. The students in grades 1-8 will attend 8:00 a.m. mass at Christ the King Church. They will receive ashes. This is the start of the holy season of Lent.

"Fat Tuesday"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will celebrate, "Fat Tuesday." The students will have a "dress down day" and class parties in the afternoon. Tomorrow the school will begin the solemn season of Lent.

"Professional Development"

After two days off because of the snow the faculty returns today. They will spend a day working on the Middle States Report. Hillside Catholic Academy will be closed on Monday February 15 in honor of President's Day.

"Holy Childhood Assembly"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will be visited by Sr. Arlene from the Holy Childhood Missions. Hillside Catholic Academy will take part in the collecting money for the Holy Childhood Missions during the month of Lent.

"Closing Liturgy"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will close our Catholic School Week celebration. The Most Rev. Dominic Marconi will celebrate our First Friday Mass. He will be the main celebrant. The pastors of Christ the King and St. Catherine of Sienna parishes will be the concelebrants. Following the liturgy the students who achieved Honor Roll status will receive their certificates.

"Spirit Day and Pep Rally"

Today is Spirit Day at Hillside Catholic Academy. The students are allowed to dress down in the school colors of green and gold. In the afternoon the Pep Rally will take place.

"St. Blaise"

Today the students of Hillside Catholic Academy had their throats blessed. This was in honor of St. Blaise.

"Career Assembly"

Today Grades 5,6,7,8 will take part in a Career Day Assembly. Four speakers will discuss the role Catholic schools have played in shaping their lives. They will also speak about their careers and field questions. These presentations will show the 'Dividends For Life' provided by our Catholic schools.

"Dividends For Life"

Today Hillside Catholic Academy will continue our celebration of Catholic School Week. The theme of this year is, "Catholic Schools Providing Dividends For Life." We will set the theme of the week with our morning assembly. Students will read poems, speeches, and other inspirational quotes. Later this afternoon the students will be treated to ice cream sundaes.

"Catholic School Week"

Catholic School Week has begun! Saturday night January 30 it was kicked off with our 'Family Pasta Dinner.' Today Catholic School Week continues with our Open House. The Open House will take place from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.

"High School"

This week is a very exciting week. Our Grade 8 students will begin to hear of their acceptance to our local Catholic high schools this week. This is a very exciting time.

"Sr. Pat Butler Visit"

On Tuesday January 12 Sr. Pat Butler SC from the Archdiocese Office of Education came for her annual visit. Sr. Pat toured the school and visited with Mr. Michael Butchko. It was a very good visit!!

"Middle States Evaluation Visit"

The Chair of Hillside Catholic Academy's Middle States Evaluation Team has been named. It is Mrs. Andrea F. Triner from Our Lady of Calvary School in Philadelphia,PA. The team will be visiting the school in late April of this year.

"Catholic Schools Week"

Catholic Schools Week will soon be upon us. This year the theme is, "Dividends for Life." We are now putting the final details to our plan. We will provide more details as we get closer to this fun filled week of events.

"Art Student of the Month"

This morning Hillside Catholic Academy will honor Grade 7 student Andre Perez as our, "Art Student of the Month." This program is new this year and is the work of our Art teacher Mrs. MaryEllen McVeigh.

"Open House"

Hillside Catholic Academy invites all interested parties to our Open House. This will take place on Sunday January 31 from 12 - 2:00 p.m.

"Welcome to the New Year"

Hillside Catholic opens 2010 with great anticipation. We will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week with a new series of events. The most important event will take place in April when we are visited by our Middle States Evaluation Team. It should be a very exciting year.
